NS Surgical & Medical Pty Ltd – N95 Masks N95 Particulate Respirator (Mask), Five Layers.
Both N95 masks and KN95 masks are made from multiple layers of synthetic material (typically a polypropylene plastic polymer) and are designed to be worn over the mouth and nose. Straps behind your ear help to hold the mask in place. Masks reduces wearer’s exposure to particles including small particle aerosols and large droplets (only non-oil aerosols). Perfect for professional use these masks can be worn on construction sites, work places, in public areas or in areas of pollution and concern.
Both masks must filter out and capture 95 percent of tiny 0.3-micron particles in the air (hence the “95” in the names). They are tested for fluid resistance, filtration efficiency (particulate filtration efficiency and bacterial filtration efficiency), flammability and biocompatibility.
KN95 masks are considered the Chinese equivalent of N95 masks. They feature a tentlike shape that creates a little pocket of air between your nose and the fabric, which makes them appealing to many people: They feel easier to breathe through, less obstructive and stifling.
N95 masks are the US standards for respirator masks. N95 masks are “the most common of the seven types of particulate filtering facepiece respirators. What makes N95s so highly sought after is that their quality is certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to meet their standards for use in health care and even surgical settings. N95s undergo the rigorous inspection and certification set forth by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and only after being certified are they approved as medical-grade masks. This is because they filter at least 95% of airborne particles, among other qualities, according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
KN95 masks are ultimately designed to do the same thing. The major difference is that these do not meet the NIOSH standards for approval in the same settings. They do meet China’s standards for masks in the same settings, and according to Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. They are one of several types of respirator masks that are approved for use in health care in other countries, but not the United States.
According to mask manufacturer, it is reasonable to consider” China’s KN95s “equivalent” to US N95s. Mask standards for Europe (FFP2), Australia (P2), Korea (KMOEL), and Japan (DS) are also highly similar.
Lots of users care most about what percentage of particles the masks capture. On this metric, N95 and KN95 respirator masks are the same. Both masks are rated to capture 95% of tiny particles (0.3-micron particles, to be exact).
Difference Between K95 & N95 Masks
Both ratings require masks to be tested for filtration efficiency at capturing salt particles (NaCl). Both are tested at a flow rate of 85 L/minute. However, there are some differences between N95 and KN95, highlighted here.
Key differences are:
1. To be certified as a KN95 mask, the Chinese government requires the manufacturer to run a special mask fit test on real humans with ≤ 8% leakage. The N95 mask standard does not require manufacturers to run fit tests.
2. N95 masks have slightly stricter requirements for pressure drop while inhaling. That means they’re required to be slightly more breathable than KN95 masks. N95s and KN95s are both rated to capture 95% of particles. N95 masks have slightly stronger breathability standards.
3. N95s also have slightly stricter requirements for pressure drop while exhaling , which should help with breathability.
4. The filter layers of N95 respirators were 8-fold thicker and had 2-fold higher dipole charge density than that of KN95 respirators.
5. N95 Masks Inhalation resistance of ≤ 343 Pa compared to ≤ 350 Pa for KN95 6.N95 Masks exhalation resistance of ≤ 245 Pa compared to ≤ 250 Pa for KN95
In Australia, surgical or examination masks intended to reduce or prevent the transmission of disease or micro-organisms (such as bacteria or viruses) are medical devices. These products are regulated by the TGA and are required to be included in the ARTG before they can be supplied.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is undertaking a post-market review of face masks included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).
The TGA post-market review of face masks will validate if the devices included in the ARTG through the Class I inclusion process meet all the regulatory requirements and perform as intended.
The review will be done to meet the requirements of the relevant standards for Exhalation Resistance, Inhalation Resistance and Particulate Filtration Efficiency, demonstrated by 3rd party laboratory testing results.

N95 Particulate Respirator offers some of the best respiratory protection when worn correctly over the nose and mouth, protecting against the contraction, or spreading, of ill nesses like the flu and other infectious respiratory diseases. This type of face mask has been specifically designed to include highly effective filtration layers capable of filtering out greater than 95% of airborne particulates. Lab test achieved greater than 98% filtering efficiency.
Each Mask is individually packaged for hygiene and fold flat to facilitate portability and storage. Individual wrapping makes it convenient to carry and distribute without contamination.
